As a shining treasure of the four classical Chinese classics, A Dream of Red Mansions not only enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad, but also exudes far-reaching influence. Its cross-border dissemination cannot be separated from those classic and excellent translation versions. Since this work is deeply rooted in the culture of traditional Chinese medicine, its translation into English is full of numerous challenges and difficulties. Hawkes’s English translation of A Dream of Red Mansions is the first complete English translation in the world, and its translation quality is excellent and highly representative. This paper will take Hawkes’s translation as the foundation of the study, cleverly combined with ecological translation theory, and try to interpret the English translation of those TCM culture-loaded words in A Dream of Red Mansions from three unique dimensions of language, culture and communication. In this way, I hope to contribute to the translation and research of traditional Chinese classics.
