Elly van Gelderen. 2022. Third Factors in Language Variation and Change.
The rapid development of social networks has led to significant variations in language usage. Based on the theory of language variation, this article delves into the causes, types, and characteristics of language variation in social networks, and evaluates its impact on language norms, dissemination, and development. Subsequently, the reasons for the variation of social network language were analyzed from the perspectives of society, technology, and individuals, and the impact of socio-cultural background, technological progress, and individual differences on language variation was elaborated. In addition, this article further analyzes the variation characteristics of vocabulary, grammar, and phonetics, and finally looks forward to the future development trend of social network language. It proposes the necessity of seeking a balance between language norms and language innovation, which helps to deeply understand the phenomenon of variation in social network language and provides new perspectives and ideas for language research.
With the rise of the internet society, traditional idioms are gradually combined with internet buzzwords, forming a new type of language expression that combines cultural heritage with modern expression. This study explores the phenomenon of the combination of idioms and internet buzzwords from the perspective of cognitive sociolinguistics. Through collecting and analyzing online data through social platforms such as Sina Weibo and TikTok, the study found that this integration is mainly reflected in two aspects of phonetic and semantic variations: phonetic variations include English and Chinese homophones;semantic variations include semantic elevation and degradation. From the perspective of cognitive linguistics, this integration is achieved through metaphor and metonymy mechanisms, and pragmatic and social factors also play a role. The integration of idioms and internet buzzwords not only shows social changes, but also promotes language innovation and development, which has theoretical and practical significance.
